A Military Working Dog Finds A New Home After Being Shot In The Line Of Duty
It can be hard to see what any soldier goes through, but it's important to recognize the sacrifices they all make to keep their fellow soldiers, their country and the world safe. For Layka, that sacrifice saved the lives of several members of her team. It came at the cost of her leg and seven hours to surgery, having been shot four times by an enemy soldier. Military working dogs are often put into more dangerous situations than the average soldier, and are just as courageous in the face of danger as any human.
After losing her leg, Layka's handler lobbied successfully to adopt Layka in civilian life. These adoptions are a somewhat common occurrence, as many military dog handlers form an incredibly deep bond with their animals, having entrusted their lives to them for so long.
