Rex was once a feral dog, living on the streets and fending for himself until his life was turned around when he was adopted into a loving forever home.
Now, he's all too happy to pay that kindness forward - and one little bird couldn't be more grateful.
CBS Los Angeles
It happened one day when Rex and his owner, Ed, were out for a walk. Suddenly, Rex noticed something unusual on the ground. It turned out to be an injured hummingbird, covered in ants.
Ed thought the hummingbird, whom they nicknamed Hummer, was already dead, but Rex refused to give up and didn't want to leave. After Ed saw that the bird was still alive, he decided to take the bird home and give it a new life.
"It was this little creature," says Ed. "This fragile creature that the whole world wanted to kill and he was trying to protect her so I thought I'd go the distance."
As a matter of fact, Ed says that Hummer has "developed a total crush on Rex" and is basically always at his side.
While the bird's crush on Rex is adorable, Ed suspects that she'll eventually set her sights on a more fitting mate as she matures. Until then, however, she and Rex will continue to be the best of friends.
"I rescue this dog. He rescues the bird. The bird rescues all of us in a weird sense and it's just a miracle."
