After 22 Years, Two Artists And Former Lovers Have A Powerful Reunion

Back in 1976, performance artists Marina Abramovic and Uwe Laysiepen (Ulay) began an intense love affair and artistic collaboration. Those close to the couple say that their love was full of energy and attraction, which is why it surprised many when they decided to go their separate ways 12 years later in 1988.

Being artists, they didn't just break up, though. Their breakup was the final project of their artistic collaboration, entitled The Great Wall Walk. Starting at opposite ends of the Great Wall of China, they walked some 2,500 km each to meet in the middle for one last embrace before saying goodbye.

Fast forward to 2010 when Marina was part of a live performance piece at the MoMa. Called The Artist is Present, the piece invited total strangers to sit at a table with her in a moment of silence. In between each encounter, she puts her head down to recompose herself. Imagine her surprise when she looks up and sees Ulay after 22 years...
