Although I personally have yet to experience the joys of fatherhood, I think I can safely say from having observed a lot of parents that one of life's greatest joys is watching your children grow up. Unfortunately, on the other end of this spectrum, the greatest tragedy a parent can ever face is the loss of their child. There are incredible stories of how parents have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, at times even achieving feats of superhuman strength/endurance, just to keep their kids safe.
Recently, however, there was a case in the U.K. where the roles were slightly reversed. In this case, the baby was the one who managed to do something miraculous in order to keep being with her family. Even doctors were absolutely amazed by what occurred, and the story is now going viral.
Meet Francesca and Lee Moore-Williams, a lovely married couple from Essex, U.K. who recently underwent an ordeal that no parent should ever have to face.
During a family vacation, their 18-month-old daughter Bella fell noticeably ill. After returning back home to the U.K., the couple took Bella to the hospital. There, doctors found abnormalities in her brain.
She was also diagnosed with biotinidase deficiency, an extremely rare condition affecting one birth in every 60,000. Biotin is needed by the body to promote healthy cell growth.
As Bella's condition worsened, she was placed on life support. In just a short time, Bella's health had deteriorated to the point that doctors advised Francesca and Lee to make a heartbreaking decision - pulling life support and saying goodbye. With heavy hearts, the couple signed a "Do Not Resuscitate" (D.N.R.) order and prepared to say their final goodbyes.
This is the last photo they took with Bella before turning off the ventilator.
Nearly half an hour after switching off the machines keeping her alive, however, Bella did something that surprised everyone. "I was holding her hand knowing there was going to be a little last breath," Lee said. "I could feel her hand dropping and it went down but then she started gripping my finger."
All of a sudden, Bella was kicking and screaming while her parents held her hands. She was literally fighting for her life in that moment. Francesca, Lee and the medical staff decided to get rid of the previous D.N.R. and leapt into action to try to keep her alive.
Miraculously, she lived. Despite overwhelming odds, Bella absolutely stunned the doctors present when her oxygen levels returned to normal.
Now, just five months later, Bella's health continues to improve by leaps and bounds. She's on a regimen of medication to manage her biotinidase deficiency. Today, her family is just grateful that they were able to spend the holiday season with their daughter.
