As always the Internet delivered and gave us more gems than we knew what to do with. Here are some of this week’s fascinating finds, everything from octo-palooza to extreme swimming.
1. The ‘90s are back.
What goes around, comes around. And it seems that the ‘90s are making a come back. Some would argue that there’s a 20-year nostalgia cycle. Others say it’s 15 or 40 years. Whatever the case may be nostalgia always wins.
2. Swimming goes extreme.
Sky Pool is a 10-story-high pool that will be made completely out of glass. It’s only a concept, slated for development in London, but it sounds terrifying, right? Fear of heights + fear of water = no bueno.
3. Weather is unpredictable and lovely.
It’s been a weird weather week. It’s not raining meatballs yet, but give it a few days. Instead we’ve seen a fire rainbow and rain bursts. Also, if the 1990s are back, then of course El Nino is getting ready to bear down this autumn and winter. It wouldn’t be a weather event without it having a crazy nickname, hence Godzilla El Nino. Us humans like to think we’ve got the world figured out, locked down and understood, but nature comes to surprise us again and again and again.
4. Octopus are fascinating.
It’s the end of summer. So, everything is sharks, dolphins, whales, and, this year, it’s also the summer of the octopi. Octopus are truly incredible creatures, looking like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Of course, we know they can squirt ink. But, they also can change colors and shift shapes.
So when the University of Chicago released a study, some members of the media took an analogy at face value and said octopus are aliens. What the report actually said is that, the DNA structure of an octopus is so genetically different, that it may as well be an alien race. Small difference. To clear it up, they aren’t.
As if that’s not cool enough, they can squeeze their entire bodies through a one-inch diameter hole. Also, like in the GIF above, they are ridiculously funny.
5. Pumpkin Spice Latte is back.
Love it or hate it, pumpkin spice lattes are here to stay. This week, the Seattle-based megachain announced a change to its beloved drink. I mean this is the company that started the pumpkin-flavored everything trend. This fall they’re taking out the caramel coloring and adding some real-to-goodness pumpkin to the recipe. For some, the release date, September 8, can’t come soon enough. If you can’t wait, make your own.
