It turns out some dimes can be worth serious dough.
If you're lucky enough to have a rare 1894-S Barber Dime, you're in luck - you're sitting on nearly two million dollars! Coin Values reports that the dimes were made as gifts for friends of the superintendent of the San Francisco Mint. There are only two in circulation, so your chances of owning one are pretty slim, but it's worth a whopping $1.9 million.
While the 1894-S is certainly the most valuable dime, it's by no means the only one. There are several dimes produced between the 18th and 19th centuries that are worth a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, such as the 1829 curl base “2” Liberty Cap Dime (worth an estimated $7,750), or the 1895-O Barber Dime (worth around $385).
What's one way to tell your dime is old enough to be worth something? One way to tell is the presence of Franklin Delano Roosevelt on the coin. Most coins that are likely to be of great value will feature be older than F.D.R.'s presidency - although there is a so-called "Roosevelt Dime" (1968-S) that's worth a few thousand bucks. Prior to F.D.R., dimes featured "an impression emblematic of liberty."
