The audition rounds of America's Got Talent are over, and it's time that contestants really put their game faces on if they want a shot at winning the whole thing. At this stage of the show, contestants are in a cutthroat competition to knock each other out of the running before they reach the final rounds.
During the audition rounds, the four main judges (Howie, Simon, Mel, and Heidi) each had a single opportunity to use the "Golden Buzzer," which would send that act straight through to the live final rounds. While all four judges already used their Golden Buzzers during the audition rounds, current contestants still have one more shot at going straight to the final - each week, a guest judge can still use the buzzer to send someone through.
Singer Brian Justin Crum had already wowed the audience in a previous episode with his rendition of Queen's "Somebody to Love." Trying to sing Freddie Mercury is extremely intimidating, but he pulled it off. This week, he returned with a rendition of Radiohead's "Creep." This is arguably Radiohead's most iconic song, and Brian delivers every emotional lyric with the perfect mix of delicacy and intensity.
Watching this song gave me goosebumps. As a fellow singer, I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Brian's outstanding vocals (ok, maybe a little jealousy too). Watching the reaction of the crowd and the judges, it's clear that everyone was aware they witnessed something special that night. Judge Howie Mandel seems especially awed, and the look on his face suggests that he almost wishes he still had a Golden Buzzer to use. Although Brian didn't get buzzed through to the finals, he certainly cemented his place as a frontrunner in this competition.
