Meet Didga, The World's Best Skateboarding Cat
Robert Dollwet, better known as CATMANTOO on YouTube, adopted his cat Didga from an Australian shelter three years ago. He was convinced that cats were trainable, and immediately began filming his efforts to teach Didga to give high fives, walk on a leash and even use the toilet! Before long, he had thousands of followers, eager to know how he had been successful in training his cat like, well, a dog.
Dollwet uses positive reinforcement methods with Didga, similar to those used by marine mammal trainers. It involves rewarding the animal swiftly when it does something correctly, which teaches it to associate the behavior with something pleasant, like a treat. However, if the animal does not respond in the desired way, it is important to never punish them, but rather ignore them for a few seconds before trying again. What you are about to see Didga do in this video was not filmed in a single shot. It is the result of years of hard work and perseverance, from both animal and man. It definitely goes a long way in breaking the myth that cats can’t be trained!
