It's always great to hear stories about people doing the right thing. It's even better to hear stories about them being rewarded. And, possibly, even better than both of those things is when the story is actually true, like in this case.
While many tales that float around the Internet are urban legends, this one actually happened (albeit with a bit of embellishment). George C. Boldt was no ordinary hotel clerk when he met the Astors; he was the manager at the Bellevue, the nicest hotel in Philadelphia. However, he did have humble beginnings. He first got a job as a dishwasher, then in a kitchen and then as a cashier, where he impressed a hotel owner who installed him at the Bellevue, which was a much shabbier hotel at that time than when the Astors visited.
