How To Make Baked Mozzarella Sticks At Home

I don't know about you, but when I go out to eat, I tend to enjoy the appetizers a lot more than the main course. Appetizers are delicious and fun to eat, and thanks to this recipe, my favorite appetizer just got so much easier to make at home.

Tonia from The Gunny Sack shared this recipe for her homemade, baked mozzarella sticks, and it honestly couldn't be simpler! These are a big favorite of mine, but the fried variety that's available at most restaurants can be pretty tricky to make at home without the right equipment.

Thanks to a few simple modifications, however, you can make these in the oven - no fuss, no muss. To get started, you'll need the ingredients pictured below.

To start, Tonia unwrapped all the cheese sticks and piled them together.

Next, she made one cut through the center of the whole pile, splitting the sticks into halves.

After that, she mixed up her regular and panko-style breadcrumbs in a bowl.

In a separate bowl, she whisked together a mixture of eggs and milk.

In a third bowl, she put basic baking flour. This is the first stop for the cheese sticks.

Once the sticks were evenly coated with flour, she coated them in the egg mixture.

Then, she rolled each stick in the breadcrumbs, making sure to get a good coating on every stick.

According to Tonia, pressing the crumbs onto the egg-covered cheese "really helps the crumbs stick and kept our fingers more clean."

Once all the sticks were coated, they were placed on a cookie sheet and put in the freezer for a minimum of half an hour.

This is a vital step in the process, Tonia says, because it "hardens the cheese so that it doesn’t melt all over the oven while baking."

Finally, the sticks were placed into a pre-heated oven and baked. All that's left now is to enjoy them!

Tonia kept things traditional by dipping her mozzarella sticks in pizza sauce, but feel free to experiment with your own flavors. According to her, not only were they everything she'd hoped they'd be, but their flavor was also reminiscent of a grilled cheese. That's a double win in my book!
