Like many of the best inventions, blue jeans were created out of necessity. Levi Strauss says that jeans originated in 1870, when the wife of a woodcutter asked Nevada tailor Jacob Davis to create pants that would not fall apart as her husband worked. Davis used duck cloth to reinforce pressure points on the jeans. Davis then turned to his friend Levi Strauss for help patenting the product. Together, they brought blue jeans to the market on May 20th, 1873. Cotton Incorporated says that the average American owns at least seven pairs of jeans, and often, many more.
