Mama Cat Treats Orphaned Baby Squirrel As If It Were One Of Her Own Kittens
This next video is certainly heartwarming, and the science behind it is just as interesting. Based on what is known about how animal brains work, scientists believe that they are hardwired to offer care to young animals in need. Although this innate urge is designed to ensure animals will take care of their own young, it can sometimes be transferred to a newborn of another species. Interspecies "adoptions" are also more likely to be successful when mom has just given birth. The high levels of oxytocin associated with delivery encourages bonding, even outside of the mother's own species. This baby squirrel was lucky to find this mama cat, right in the nick of time. When you see how she reacts to her new "child," your heart will melt.
