John Goodman of Rochester, New York was supposed to be out of the house on a day that he won’t soon forget. Now, he thinks it was fate that he was home.
John thought a homeless person was taking up residence in his yard.
"I'm like, 'My man get up,'” John told a news station. "She was like knocked out asleep. She was just lying there."
Once he got a closer look he realized that the person sleeping in his yard was a child.
"She came up out of her sweater and peeked her head out and I saw her hair and I said, 'Oh my god, that's a little girl,'" he said.
The child went on to tell him that she had run away after something happened at school and had spent the night in his yard. She was missing her shoes and her feet were injured.
John brought the girl inside to feed her and find her a pair of shoes. Trying to make sense of the situation he called up his friend.
"I said, 'I just found a little girl in my backyard,'" John recalled. "She said, 'Oh my God, they said a little girl was missing on Facebook.'"
His friend found the Facebook post and sent a screenshot of it to John. John called the phone number from the post and contacted one of the girl’s grandparents.
"They went and they got her like he said," Dunstan Luke, the girl’s grandfather, said. "And I'm still trying to come up with a way to show this man my gratitude."
Her relatives had been searching for her for hours before John called.
"Just the relief and the joy that we feel right now," Dunstan said. "I'm having a hard time - her sisters and them, they just sat down and cried."
On Facebook, John posted about how happy he was to make sure the girl was reunited with her family.
“The look her family gave me when I returned her put a glow on my heart!” he wrote.
"I love the kids. That made me feel like that could be one of mine - one of my nieces, one of my little girls. And I can't have that; that's not cool," John said.
