The 66th annual Sapporo Snow Festival held in Japan opened on February 5, 2015, with the help of a 49 foot high Star Wars sculpture. The icey piece was sponsored by Disney in anticipation of the release of “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.”
Creating something this big needs manpower, and the 11th Brigade of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force was there to support the work. The troops used bulldozers and pure muscle to bring together 3,500 tons of snow over the course of one month to create the sculpture.
The 11th Brigade has helped to support the festival since 1955. The festival typically brings around 2 million visitors from all over Japan and abroad, and this year, they were greeted by none other than Darth himself.
