The smartphone has transformed the world and for the most part, it has made things much better. No matter where you are in the world, if you're reading this on a cell phone, you benefit from greater access to education and communication. We are all closer to each other than we were before.
However, there's also something that has been lost in the process. Today's children get so much entertainment from their smartphones that they seem to have lost the art of making their own fun.
Check these children out from days gone by. Their imaginations are truly spectacular. They're having the kind of fun that kids really shouldn't miss out on when they're young.
1. The Racing Snail
This is fabulous. This 10-year-old boy has made a little cart to be pulled by a snail while another snail sits in the cart. We imagine that it was quite a slow ride.
2. Feeding The Animals
It's not that this couldn't happen today, it just seems less likely. This is a strongman from a circus helping a little girl at the zoo.
3. Pushing The Peanut
This is an unusual game in which boys raced to push peanuts to the finishing line as fast as possible, using only their noses to do the pushing.
4. Home Made Swings
There were far fewer rules and regulations governing what children could do back then. So making homemade swings was a very popular thing to do.
5. Rocking Out
One noticeable thing about the days before smartphones is that many more children were involved in making music. Just like this little girl cranking out the tunes for her canine companion.
6. Here Comes The Rain
These kids are catching rain drops the old fashioned way - with their mouths. It might not be such a good idea in polluted cities today, mind you.
7. It's A Fair Cop
The police didn't just "protect and serve" back then, they were a part of everyday community life and playing with kids was second nature and an expected part of the job.
8. Cowboys And Native Americans
This little boy is playing a childhood favorite game of "Cowboys and Indians," though today it would probably be more correct to say "Native Americans."
9. Martha Reeves Would Have Been Proud
Martha Reeves sang about "Dancing in the Streets." These kids didn't sing about it, they actually did it. Doesn't it look like fun?
10. Ewe'll Be Sorry That You Missed This
These two little girls seem to be having the time of their lives as they race across the open moors on their sturdy sheep steeds.
11. An Absolute Classic
The game of marbles seems to have nearly disappeared now, but for decades it was the most fun a kid could have with their friends.
12. Serious Side
Of course, games tend to reflect the lives of children, and these little girls are pretending to be Air Raid Wardens during the World War II bombings.
It would take a fair amount of courage to let your brothers hold you like this with no one to catch you, but she looks really happy to do so.
14. Messing Around On The River
These three little boys in Paris are playing in the street with the paper boats that they would have made by hand. They look absolutely swept up in it, too.
15. Tuba Players In Tune
This father and son team look to be having a great time as they play the same instruments. The tiny tuba is really cute, isn't it?
Children certainly had a broad range of things to do before smartphones, didn't they? These children all applied their imagination to play and created amazing memories for the years to come.
