There may be no more iconic figure of feminity and power in history than Marilyn Monroe. Born Norma Jean Mortenson, she had a very problematic childhood and was passed between multiple foster homes. It was said that she had been regularly abused during this period.
She eventually escaped her past by marrying a friend and moving away from her roots. Then Hollywood found her (or she found Hollywood) and nothing would ever be the same again.
Linked with presidents, sports stars, writers and actors, Marilyn Monroe was a sensation. Yet, many people know very little of this amazing woman and her life—let's take a closer look, shall we?
1. Marilyn Struggled With Her Lines
Marilyn Monroe found it really hard to remember her lines. She once took more than 60 takes to get "It's me, sugar," when filming Some Like It Hot.
2. Marilyn Was Usually Underpaid
Elizabeth Taylor picked up $1,000,000 for her performance in Cleopatra while Marilyn got just $100,000 for Something's Got to Give, which was shot at the same time.
3. She Never Did Get That $1 Million Paycheck
Fox signed Marilyn Monroe to a contract that would have made her her first $1 million movie. Sadly, she died just before filming could begin.
4. Mariah Carey Has Marilyn's Piano
Marilyn Monroe's well-loved baby grand piano was put up for auction in 1999 and it fetched a tidy sum of $662,500 from Mariah Carey.
5. Marilyn's Weight Fluctuated During Filming
When Marilyn was filming The Prince And The Showgirl, she couldn't keep her weight steady. Designers ended up making all of her dresses in multiple sizes, though they were not happy about it.
6. Her "Suicide" Was Peculiar
For someone who died from an overdose of alcohol and drugs, there was no alcohol found near her body and there was evidence of an injection mark (and she did not inject drugs) on her skin.
7. She Was Rumored To Have Been Assassinated
There were rumors she was having an affair with President John F. Kennedy and that he had her killed to prevent her from going public.
8. Her Cause Of Death May Be In Doubt
The coroner reported "probable suicide" and alleged that the toxicity of her liver proved this, but he destroyed all the other organs without testing them.
9. She Worked Out And Was Strong
Before she became famous, Marilyn Monroe used to work out in a weightlifting gym. She was well-known for being able to balance her boyfriend on her shoulders at that time.
10. She Was A Big Reader
Her husband, Arthur Miller, thought she was an educational embarrassment—but the truth was she was a well-educated woman who was reading two books when she passed away.
11. She Only Ever Had One Home Of Her Own
Unlike today's stars, Marilyn didn't have a parade of houses and homes in an investment portfolio. She only ever bought 12305 Fith Helena Drive in Brentwood. That's where she died, too.
12. She Liked Wearing No Clothes
Marilyn would regularly offend wardrobe staff, makeup artists, and hairdressers because she didn't like wearing clothes and she often didn't while they worked.
13. She Was An Early Adopter Of Yoga
Maybe it was Marilyn who sparked this lasting fitness trend in the West? Whichever way that turned out, Indra Devi gave her yoga lessons. He also gave Gloria Swanson and Greta Garbo lessons.
14. She Left A Lot Of Money Behind
She may not have been very well paid per movie, but she left behind an estate worth $1.6 million. Her acting coach got the largest share of it.
15. Marilyn Monroe Had Hormone Mutations
To keep her skin porcelain white, Marilyn was fond of using a hormone-based cream and that gave her a hairy face. She liked the peach fuzz, though, and thought it made her look better on screen.
Marily Monroe was a truly amazing talent and it is such as shame she was taken from us when she was so young.
