We all know the saying "don't judge a book by its cover." It doesn't just apply to books, it means we should be slow to judge someone based on their outward appearance. Unfortunately, far too many of us fail to follow this advice, which leads to some of humanity's most awful cruelties. One young pit bull recently experienced this neglect and prejudice, and it almost cost the puppy his life.
The dog was abandoned by his owners and separated from his family for nothing but superficial reasons - and then was left at a high-kill animal shelter with little chance of escaping. Luckily, he was taken in by one caring woman, who dedicated her heart and home to keeping the pup safe.
The incredible story of this dog's abandonment and recovery has touched people all over the world. Keep reading to learn more about the brave little puppy and the woman who saved him.
This baby pit bull was found alone outside a high-kill shelter in North Carolina.
The puppy was born with a deformed left ear and a blind eye. He was abandoned and separated from his family because of his physical limitations.
Luckily, Nicole Horabik saw the animal listed on the shelter's website and immediately went out to save him.
Nicole works for Cause to Paws, an organization that seeks to rescue unwanted animals from shelters. She took the young pit bull home and named him Captain Morgan.
Then, Nicole wrote an emotional Facebook post to explain the background of the 8-week-old pup. People from all over the world read and shared Captain Morgan's heartbreaking story.
"What people need to take away is that imperfection is perfection. Not all dogs are perfect in your eyes, but they can be amazing dogs," Nicole said.
Captain Morgan was given a clean bill of health by the vet, and now Nicole is turning to the Internet once again.
She is hoping to find a loving family to adopt the puppy full-time and show him all the affection he deserves.
