This Hummingbird Is Taking A Nap. When I Heard The Noise It Made, I Couldn't Stop Laughing
A bizarre animal, the hummingbird is so optimized for flight that it has lost the ability to walk. If it needs to move, it has no choice but to use its incredible wings. Beating at up to 200 times per second, they are a blur to the human eye and allow the hummingbird to hover and reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. The forces involved would cause an experienced fighter pilot to black out. They are fast at everything else, too... eating, breathing, and even their hearts beat at close to 200 times per minute. Several subspecies have such heavy beaks compared to their body that they have to perch with their heads pointed upward -- just like this little guy, who is clearly exhausted from a life of visceral thrills and reckless velocity.
