Frikkie Von Solms is a 69-year-old man in Southern Africa who, for the past 11 years, has been raising an African lion named Zion. Their friendship is so sweet and tender. Frikkie takes off his shoes when they walk together because the sound of his soles on the ground is too much for Zion's sensitive ears, and Frikkie never loses site of the respect he has for this huge cat.
Zion was born in captivity, but was separated from his mother shortly after birth for fear that his father would kill him.
All 11 years of his life have been spent under Frikkie's care.
The 69-year-old Frikkie comes to life around Zion.
“People talk about lions like they are just lions but they have personalities, they have humour and laugh," he says.
"He has never attacked humans and I trust him completely.”
“It was a once in a lifetime experience to grow up with him and learn and live with him through all of the stages of being a lion."
Frikkie has raised 19 lions, tigers and cheetahs.
Like any housecat, Zion has free range of Frikkie's bed, home and truck.
Frikkie holds Zion’s tail affectionately when they walk together. Zion doesn’t seem to mind.
You can just sense the tremendous love between these two.
