Upside Down Koi Pond
Many people enjoy keeping fish, either outside in a pond or inside in an aquarium, but how many can say they have a look-out tower for their aquatic friends? YouTuber TCHelmut can claim just that! The German koi enthusiast had a small pond in his garden, filled with fish and beautiful to look at, but it was missing something. That's when he got the idea to take a traditional aquarium outside to add to his pond ... only he put it upside down.
The "anti-gravity aquarium" is made with 1-centimeter thick glass and filled with water by hose slowly from the bottom of the aquarium to the top that sucks all the air out, causing the water to rise. TCHelmut says up to 20 koi swim up into the tower each day, some lingering there for hours at a time. Although the tower can look a little crowded, the fish simply look larger than they are because of the glass and water.
So, are you inspired to build your own backyard pond with its very own lookout tower? If so, you'll need a spot that offers a minimum of 100 square feet of surface area. This allows enough oxygenation and space for the koi to grow. As for water volume, koi ponds should hold 1,000 gallons of water at a minimum. At its deepest points, your pond should be at least 6 feet; there should also be shallow areas of about 2-3 feet. At least two pumps keep water circulating and prevent stagnant areas and proper filtration is also vital.
