Why You Should Put A Bowl On Top Of A Cake Before Cutting Into It

When most of us try to cut a really large cake, the inevitable result is a bunch of randomly-sized slices that all vary wildly from one another. A fight ensues amongst your kids/guests about who gets what slice. Chaos ensues. Riots break out in the streets. The National Guard is called in. THEY start fighting over the best slice too. Society crumbles. You get the idea.

Ok, admittedly that's taking it a bit far, but if you've never seen a bunch of kids arguing it out over the "big slice," then I envy the peaceful and tranquil existence you've managed to live. I for one hate getting the job of cake cutting at any party. I do everything I can to pass it off to whichever unwitting victim is willing to take it from me. I'm ok on the regular-sized cakes, but when confronted with one of the jumbo cakes that kids seem to adore, I break out in a cold sweat.

Apparently, I wasn't alone in my behemoth baked goods befuddlement. Rachael Ray recently had a guest with some brilliant advice on how to cut up perfectly even pieces of cake every time, and all you need is a bowl!

Using a salad or mixing bowl is the trick to getting nice, even slices every time. It's a hack that caterers and restaurant workers have known for a long time, but it's only just now making its way to the general public.

Start by taking a bowl that will fit within the center of your cake, leaving about five or six inches of space between the bowl and the outside edge. This will obviously depend on the size of your cake and/or bowl. The general thing to remember is bowl upside-down in the middle of the cake, leaving a decently-sized outer ring of cake.

Now, using a sharp knife, use the edge of the bowl to cut into the center of the cake, essentially creating a smaller cake inside the large cake.

To see the hack in action, watch the video below. Trust me when I say, though, that this is a brilliant tip that any good host should put into their arsenal.
