Would You Cross The Scariest Bridge In The World?

Have you ever pulled into your driveway and realized you don't remember most of the ride home? I know I have, plenty of times. Maybe you had a tough day and needed to think it over, maybe it was the great tunes on the radio, or maybe you just zoned out. I'm sure there's a name for it, but, whatever you call it, it's a bit unsettling.

It basically boils down to inattention: you're so used to the drive, or focused on what has to happen when you get home, that your brain processes the normal patterns (slow here, take a left now, make sure to back in) rapidly and the time seems short, or even nonexistent. I wish I could do that on command!

Even if I could, I would probably forgo that power if my commute consisted of a bridge like this:

This is the Eshima Ohashi bridge in Japan. It looks normal enough, right?

That is, until you see the height you have to scale to cross it.

The bridge connects the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato, which has a large port for cruise ships, fishing boats, and shipping container freightlines. That is why it is so tall - to allow room for the ships to pass underneath.

Not to mention that weird kink in the middle ...

It is Japan's largest rigid frame bridge, and is the third largest of its kind in the world. The weird kink is to help offset the gradient difference of 6.1 percent on one side to 5.1 percent on the other.

Looks like a ramp on a roller coaster ... to nowhere!

What's Hot

Can you imagine driving up and down such a slope in bad weather? The angle has been approved for safety, but what a mind game it must be.

It is definitely breathtaking.

I am pretty sure I wouldn't zone out on this portion of my commute - I'd be grasping the wheel, white-knuckled, on both the upward and downward journey. Though, somedays, I may just throw my hands up and enjoy the ride.
