An Evicted WWII Veteran Comes Back Home After His Community Rallies Around Him
90-year-old Johnnie Hodges is a World War II Navy veteran and a devoted husband to his wife, who struggled with Alzheimer's. Hodges poured his finances into caring for her, and as a result he became delinquent on some of his loan payments.
He was still in a large amount of debt when she passed away and was consequently evicted from the house the couple had shared for over 60 years. Being a natural warrior, however, he didn't take the news lying down and authorities had to tie him to a stretcher and forcefully evict him from the property.
When neighbors heard about the situation, they understandably felt that Hodges had been treated unjustly. Local businessman Greg Elwood and Congressman Brian Higgins stepped in to rally the community and raised over $110,000 to help Hodges buy back his home.
