A military veteran spends his spare time cleaning up a historic park in California, because sometimes humans ARE good after all.

Kennett Makaiwi has had a rough life in many ways. He served in the Vietnam War and has dealt with bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and drug abuse.

At one point, he didn’t expect to live past 33!

Now 66 years old, Kennett lives in Santa Rosa, California. He’s in therapy and feeling much better, and he lives in a subsidized rental across the street from historic Juilliard Park.

During one stroll early this year, Kennett noticed that the grass was so overgrown that it covered the walkway’s brick borders.

Kennett told Press Democrat:

“I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, don’t tell me the whole thing is like that,'”.

He decided to cut the grass away from the park’s walkways all throughout the park, with the help of a shovel from his girlfriend.

That was three months ago.

Kennett now spends a couple hours at a time, maintaining the park’s walkways.

City parks employees carry the cuttings away.

For Kennett, the work is calming and satisfying:

“I’m in a lot of therapy at [Veterans Affairs]. I call this part of my therapy.

It’s a way for me to get out of my place. If something is bothering me, I go out and work.

It’s a godsend, actually.”

Bravo Kennett!
