The scenes of devastation emerging from the Bahamas are heart-wrenching and so are the many stories of people losing loved ones during Hurricane Dorian. But, as in every tragedy or disaster, there are some glimmers of hope that make you believe there is still some good in the world.
Enter Chella Phillips. She’s a lifesaver. Literally.
The Bahamas has had a large stray dog population for years and Phillips runs an organization called The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, Bahamas. During a hurricane like Dorian, stray animals are usually left to fend for themselves and, unfortunately, many die. Phillips wanted to make sure she could do her part during the storm, so she did something truly incredible.
So what did she do?
Rescued 97 stray dogs and brought them to her home to protect them during Hurricane Dorian!

Phillips wrote on Facebook,
“97 dogs are inside my house and 79 of them are inside my master bedroom. It has been insane since last night, poop and piss non stop but at least they are respecting my bed and nobody has dared to jump in.”
After the storm passed, Phillips implored people on Facebook to consider rescuing the animals permanently instead of leaving them on the streets to fend for themselves.
She wrote,
“I need you all for financial support, to continue helping this island’s homeless. Just as important, I need your help to find forever homes for my babies.”
A truly inspiring story about a woman who cares deeply about animals.
