A woman in the UK found an unexpected new “happily ever after” after choosing her dogs over her husband.

Liz Haslam and her husband, Mike, were married for over 25 years. Liz was just 16 years old when she met Mike, and they got married shortly after graduating from high school. They moved into a two bedroom house in the English countryside and had a child, Ollie.

Soon, though, Liz had a lightbulb moment about what to do with all of the space in their countryside home. She decided to start a rescue for her favorite dog breed, bull terriers.

Beds for Bullies rehabilitates disabled bull terriers, so there are always dogs around Liz’s house, and they take up a lot of her attention. She spends about 18 hours a day taking care of her dogs and spends hundreds of dollars on their medical needs.

Mike eventually felt overwhelmed by the situation, and he gave Liz an ultimatum.

“My husband said ‘It’s either the dogs or me,'” she said. “Since that moment I have neither seen nor heard from him.”

For some people, the decision might have been a difficult one. But for Liz, who grew up around dogs and has always been passionate about them, the decision was clear.

“I thought that, after 25 years, he should’ve known that giving up dogs was not a part of my intentions, not at all,” Liz said. “he knew from the moment we got married what I was all about. I don’t know what he expected.”

Meanwhile, Beds for Bullies is going strong. Liz has rescued over 200 dogs over the years.
