An Inside Look At A McDonald's Fry Factory

Jan 22, 2015
Does McDonald's use real potatoes? Why do the fries always taste so good? Are they mashed and formed in a mold? Grant Imahara, an engineer by trade, investigated how McDonald's makes their world famous fries. He decided to deconstruct the fry making process by taking the finished product and working backwards to see if he could find answers.

Imahara visited Simplot, McDonald's USA potato supplier, and was given a tour of the deconstructed process. The tour was given by Coco, who at one point stated "Potatoes are like people; they come in all shapes and sizes, and they're all beautiful." Imahara found that there are essentially five different stages in the production process, with the biggest emphasis on consistency at each stage.
