Check Out The 3D-Printing Technology That Will Build A Base On The Moon

Mar 13, 2015
People living on the moon and in space stations built by robots are no longer ideas only for science fiction novels. In 2013, the European Space Agency (ESA) proved that 3D printing and using readily available materials were possible solutions to building a space station on the moon.

Working with industrial partners, such as architecture firm Foster + Partners, during the original study, ESA and partners were able to put together a hypothetical trip to the moon that included the 3D printing of an entire lunar base. The proposed mission outlines the design factors, and it explains how the lunar material could be used to house and protect those inside from radiation, space debris and even sunlight. All of the studies that have been done leading up to the hypothetical mission will provide input for the next stage's designs.
