Colleges Are Using Free Robotics Programs To Get Inner City Kids Excited About Science

Apr 10, 2015
The Michigan Engineering Zone (a.k.a. the "MEZ") is a facility located at the University of Michigan's Detroit Center. At the MEZ, students from all around the area can find the tools, teaching and facilities to explore their scientific curiosities and develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The MEZ organizes robotics competitions as a hands-on way of getting kids involved in STEM-related endeavors. Out of 42 high school seniors who participated in MEZ activities in 2014, 38 went on to college and four went to the military. All of the students graduated, in contrast to the average 71 percent graduation rate in Detroit Public Schools.
