Historic, Color-Restored Footage Shows What Berlin Looked Like In July Of 1945

May 8, 2015 By Archit Tripathi
The Battle of Berlin, (a.k.a. the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation) was the last major battle in the European Theater of WWII. Before the battle was over, Adolf Hitler and several of his prominent followers committed suicide, rather than face retribution for their war crimes. The city's remaining defenders surrendered a few days later on May 2, 1945. Fighting continued in the western parts of the city, as German soldiers attempted to push westwards so they could surrender to the Western Allies, rather than face the retribution of the Soviets (German forces caused untold destruction to the U.S.S.R. during the war). But, the war in Europe officially ended on May 8, 1945.

This rare historical footage, restored to full color, shows the aftermath of the Battle of Berlin. Soldiers from Western and Soviet forces can be seen around the city, as can the sheer destructive toll the battle took on the land.
