Big Think was created to provide a place for the top experts to ponder new ideas and skills that define the 21st century. Their goal is to reduce and streamline the massive amounts of information found today. Applying a three-pronged concept, they are looking for ideas or concepts that have significance, relevance and application. They consider the following questions when examining an idea: How might this one idea change the world and impact lives? Who does it most affect? How can this idea change how individuals think, act or even feel?

In this case, Big Think enlisted Dr. James Manyika, the director of the McKinsey Global Institute and senior partner at McKinsey & Company, to explore the current reach of technology. Manyika's perception is that technology has reached even the poorest countries on the planet. While this is often a good thing, there are economic consequences that are aligned with these advancements.
