The Oldest Working Nurse In The U.S. Gets A Special Surprise On Her Birthday
May 16, 2015
Rigney actually took the day off on her birthday (which also happened to be the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII), so the hospital staff celebrated with her the day before. They surprised her with some "birthday princess" gear, and the hospital's CEO personally presented her with a bouquet to complete the look. Her children were also in attendance for their mother's big day.
Florence "SeeSee" Rigney turned 90 on May 8, 2015, officially becoming the oldest active registered nurse in America. She first donned a nurse's uniform back in 1946 as a student nurse at the Tacoma General School of Nursing. Since then, she's worked with countless patients, moved several times, had kids and grandkids but still ended up back in Washington, where she currently does two days a week at Tacoma General Hospital. She also flirted ever so briefly with retirement back when she was 67, but after just five short months, she was back on the job.
