This Pianist Was Prepared To Play The Wrong Piece, But Recovered With Masterful Grace

Mar 6, 2015
A concerto is a musical composition for a solo instrument with backing accompaniment by an orchestra. If you're the soloist playing a concerto, the last thing in the world you'd ever want is to find out last minute that you have to play a piece you weren't expecting.

Of course, if you're a world class pianist such as Maria Joao Pires, that might not be such a big deal. Pires, a native of Portugal, started playing piano at the age of 5, and was playing Mozart concertos in public when she was 7. International fame came at age 26, when she won the 1970 Beethoven Bicentennial Competition. Today, Pires is a legend in the world of classical music, and this video is just one of the reasons why.
